How to Get Rid of Weeds without Killing Grass

In this article, we’ll share with you some ways to keep weeds away from your garden without using unpleasant chemicals that could damage the quality of your crops and your soil.

How to Get Rid of Weeds without Killing Grass

Remove them

Of course, this sounds simple, but anyone who has tried to keep their garden without the weeds, pulling them, knows that it is not always so easy.

The best time to weed out is when the soil is still wet from watering. You should pull slowly, from the base of the herb, to get the best chance of pulling the full root. Make sure you always wear gloves that are suitable for gardening, as this will prevent injuries from more prickly plants.

If you want to take advantage of their weeds, put them in a compost heap and they will be contributing to the health of your garden. To your knowledge, there are some weeds that are edible, such as the dandelion, beldroegas and the lettuce of the miner.

Choke them

Like their harvest and their flowers, weeds have difficulty surviving without adequate sunlight. With this tip, you can kill the existing weeds and still prevent new ones from growing. In addition to preventing the appearance of weeds, if you cover the soil with a little old newspaper and dry leaves, it will keep the soil moisture, favoring the plants you want to preserve.

The trick is simple enough! You just need to cover the infected area with several large newspaper layers. Then put a good layer of dry leaves on the newspaper, preferably enough to completely cover the paper.

If even so, some stronger weeds can get through the first layer, just add another, resorting to the newspaper and leaves.

Apply a homemade herbicide

You should use a good bottle of spray and fill it with:

  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar;
  • ½ spoon with salt;
  • some dishwashing detergent;

Subsequently, you should make sure that you mixed all the ingredients nicely. The idea is for the salt to dissolve as much as possible so that the spray bottle does not get clogged.

Once the preparation is ready, you can apply it to your weeds. However, it is important that you exercise caution when using this remedy near the plants you want to preserve, as it can kill them as well.

If you have problems with the sprayer due to clogging, you can try another preparation, in this case, 50/50 vinegar and water.

Scale them

The next time you are boiling potatoes or pasta, instead of pouring the water through the barrel, pour it directly into your weeds, especially those that grow in the cracks of your sidewalk, in the yard or along your garden paths.

However, it is important to note that this trick should not be applied in flower beds or gardens, as it can damage the quality of your soil and kill the whole plantation.

Pass Salt on them

This is another method with which you have to be very careful, because where the salt touches, probably nothing will be born again since the soil will be sterile.

However, the trick is quite simple. Put pinches of salt along the edges of your lawn, between cracks in the sidewalk or on garden paths. Thus, it is certain and knows that it will kill all weeds.

Burn them

For this method, we advise you to purchase a hand torch. Then just fire the weeds! Simple right? Be careful not to get hurt and remember that you do not need to totally melt the plant, you just need to get a little fire. So they will lose their internal moisture and will die in the next few days.

Cover them

For ornamental garden areas, you should plan a more advanced treatment, because only then will you make sure that you will rarely or never have to weed out.

You can look in your local horticultural plant to cover the soil and to prevent the weeds from receiving sunlight, water or other nutrients from the earth.

Researchers at Cornell University have identified the following plants as perfect agents for weed suppression:

  • Liriope
  • Solidago sphacelata
  • Alchemilla mollis
  • Thymus praecox
  • Phlox subulata
  • Lamiastrum galeobdolon
  • Nepeta x faasenii

Create an advanced plan and let the sun work

If you have a vacant lot during the summer, you can prepare it for autumn plantings without weeds.

You only need plastic (thin and transparent), which is found in most garden stores.

To start the soil treatment, you must resort to a rake and untangle the ground that will prepare. You should then dig a small trench (about 8 cm deep) around the area of soil you want to treat. Once finished, apply the plastic, and the ends of the plastic should end in the trenches you dug. Subsequently, close the trenches by placing the soil that had been previously removed. Remember to make sure that the plastic covers the entire area you want to treat, being applied without any kind of space or clearances.

Finally, you should keep the plastic for 4-6 weeks. When you remove it, add your fertilizer or fertilizer. At this point, you will have a healthy, ready soil for the autumn plantings, which will have significantly fewer weeds.

Try these tricks on your ground and share the results with your friends and neighbors. You will see that they will be positive and very rewarding.
