How to Plant Magnolia Seeds

  1. Take out a seed pod from a magnolia tree between the months of March and April. The pods are oval and slightly furry objects. If it has already begun to open, you can look at the orange seeds inside it.
  2. Put the pod in a dry place and let it dry for three days. As it dries, the seeds will loosen from the pod. Wrap it in a paper towel or newspaper and shake it firmly to dislodge the seeds.
  3. Fill a bowl with hot water and place all the seeds inside it. Let them soak from one day to the next to soften the orange peel of the seed.
  4. Remove the seeds from the water and rub them firmly between the fingers to remove the protective peel and reveal the dark seed.
  5. Select an outdoor location to plant it that has partial sun and shade. Make a hole about 0.5 cm deep and place the magnolia seed. Cover the seed thoroughly with the soil.
  6. Spread a 2-cm layer of blanket over the area to protect the seed from low temperatures and keep the soil moist.
  7. Water the soil until it is moist. Shower it daily until the seeds germinate. After they sprout, reduce to once or twice a week.
